Part II - The Thieves
The realization that they were followed back from across the lake (with the memories from the “gray world of the nightmare” - LOVE IT!) reminds me of a stanza from “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”:
Like one that on a lonesome road
Walks on in fear and dread,
And having once turned round, walks on,
And turns no more his head,
Because he knows a frightful fiend
Doth close behind him tread.
Hmm... Maybe, or maybe the visit to the lake served another purpose, which hasn’t been revealed yet.
